Description
Up for sale, a 1984 Rickenbacker 4003 in exceptional, 100% original condition and in perfect working order. Featuring the original custom color Burgundyglo gloss finish and neck through body construction, this Rickenbacker thumps and growls with the best and the sustain is near endless. A rare custom color which hasn't been offered by Rickenbacker for decades, the Burgundyglo finish on the bass is a rich transparent red that bridges the gap between cherry and wine red. Currently strung with fresh 45-100 roundwound strings, there's equal parts midrange power and fundamental warmth available via the two original Hi-Gain single coil pickups. The bass is well-balanced on a strap at 8lbs 15oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike's Guitar Bar with comfortable action and solid intonation. The maple neck has a very round and substantial C-shaped neck profile carve with generous shoulders and even more heft in the higher registers of the fretboard. It's an unusually deep profile for a Ric bass, measuring .965" deep at the 1st fret and 1.075" at the 12th. The 33 1/4" scale is Rickenbacker's traditional long scale, and the gloss-finished slab rosewood fretboard features original frets and pearl triangle inlays. The medium jumbo frets offer easy playability in every register and are exceedingly clean, showing just a touch of wear on the crowns of frets 1-3. The nut measures a full 1 5/8" in width, with ideal string spacing. The original Rickenbacker logo/truss rod cover is present, along with the stock tuning machines which turn smoothly and hold pitch well.
All of the electronics work as they should, with untouched solder joints and an original harness with CTS pots that date to mid-1981. The Rick-o-Sound stereo jackplate has a cleanly stamped serial number with a "XK" prefix, conclusively dating production to November of 1984. All of the original chrome hardware and plastic parts are present and extremely clean, and the original mute is intact too with its original, still viable foam. The distinctive two-piece pickguard only seen on early 4003 examples shows a few requisite pick marks, and the gloss Burgundyglo finish exhibits a spot of light, concentrated buckle rash central to the upper bout on the back and just a few additional minor nicks on the back, with one tiny touched up nick adjacent to the buckle rash. The gloss finish on the neck profile is clean and smooth.
The original black tolex hardshell case is included. The case has a clean exterior with black leather ends, retaining a trio of functional latches and the stock handle.
