PLEASE READ - The truss rod nut broke off and it is possible the truss rod is broken. As a result the neck relief is pretty large and despite all my efforts I cannot adjust it. I have a picture showing the truss rod where the adjustment nut broke off, and that I enlarged the cavity a bit to try and get vice grips on to adjust the neck, with no success.
The bass is sold AS-IS and you should assume the relief on the neck cannot be adjusted, and just assume the truss rod is broken.
With that said, the bass still plays well, is properly intonated, has very minimal to none (depending on playing style) fret buzz, and stays tuned.
It just it has a lot of relief in the neck and somewhat
high action as a result. I have a picture at the 12th fret (max relief), and the bottom of the E string is about .5cm (over 1/8 but less than 1/4 inch) above the fret board for reference. The relief lets you play pretty hard without “clanging” and some players like it like this.
But ONLY buy this bass if you understand you won’t be able to adjust the neck at all or get super low action and the truss rod nut is broken off, and just assume the truss rod is broken. It is sold AS-IS and no returns.
With that clear…
This is beautiful Carvin LB-70 bass that I’ve owned for more than 10 years (and most of that time I played it after I broke the truss rod nut).
Highlights:
Carvin USA made bass in good
cosmetic condition.
Some minor bangs and scratches to be expected on a 20+ year old bass.
Of note on the top of the headstock is a little rough (from hitting a low ceiling), and scratch/dent near the controls.
They don’t really show in the photos, pretty minor, but it has various beauty marks, it’s not “mint” but still very nice.
Neck-through and string through (or bridge through) construction, tung-oil finish
Tung-oil finish on the body and neck. There is no paint or “gloss” anywhere on this bass, you just oil it up now and then like you would fine furniture.
Solid walnut body with rounded sides (technically, two solid walnut “wings”)
5-piece maple/walnut string-through neck with ebony fingerboard with rounded lower edges.
This is the most comfortable bass neck I have ever played - no question.
The original ebony fret board had a very hard and sharp edge, so I rounded the lower edge to make it much more comfortable.
Frets and finger board are in good condition.
Two Jazz-bass style single-coil pickup, opposite wound so they humbuck when at the same level.
Pickups sound very nice and the bass has a “woody” tone.
Passive electronics, Volume (front p/u), Volume (rear p/u), Tone.
Everything works great, the cavity is copper shielded and the electronics are very quiet and very dependable.
Sealed Carvin tuners that are super smooth and rewardingly precise, just wonderful (MUCH better than my Fender open-backs)
Very nice fully adjustable, high-mass bridge.
Individual height and tuning for each string, and the bridge supports both string-through and neck-through configurations. (Currently set up as neck-through).
Even with all the neck relief, the bridge is super flexible and lets me play/stay in tune, and the bass is very playable.
Graphite nut - very nice touch, the strings tune very smoothly without ever binding on the nut
Chrome hardware
Very light bass and a joy to wear all night. I just weighed it at 8 lbs 1oz.
Shipping will be double boxed or (hardshell case and box with Buy it Now).
Really nice, American made, natural/tung-oil finish, super comfortable and light bass.
If you like a neck with a lot of relief (that you won’t be able to adjust), you should love this bass.
BONUS - if you use “Buy it now” I will also include the original Carvin hardshell case (that is in excellent condition and custom fits this bass perfectly.)
The case is black and says "Carvin" in large recessed letters.
I’ve tried to tell you the whole story of this bass.
