KIfaru QUANDRY Pack. This pack is in a league of its own. It was developed by Kifaru with a lot of imput from a person who loves hunting and riding bicycles. And this pack truly shows that. It shines most in adventurous biking setting. Because it is a narrow pack it does not stick from sides on your back. It keeps all the weight and volume close to your back right in the center along the spine. This makes biking in harsh conditions very safe and pleasurable. It moves with the body and sticks to it like a snakeskin not restricting you in any way.
It is made from tough quality Cordura 500. This pack can take a lot of abuse. While I have used this pack in different enviroment from the pictures you can see it looks like new and it does. The materials used are top notch. From main body material to straps and clips.
Second because of the expanding side zipper feature you can easily add extra volume when it is needed. From the superficial observation of its petite size you can put a LOT of stuff if you need to. It looks like a magic trick.
What I love about the pack.
It has a roll top system. This feature allows me to stuff the back beyond its limit put tall long items and still close the bag enough. The front pocket is extremely versatile. I used it more then the internal space. It is roomy (you can fit a helmet) yet it doesn't stick out or take up space nor add any substantial weight to the pack. It is easy access but with multiple straps you can lock stuff safely inside. The back of the pack is soft enough , I have never felt discomfort of stuff sticking in to my back no matter what I carried.
What I don't like.
It has a roll top system.
When you need to access the stuff frequently this roll top system is not as quick and convenient as a zipper lid would be. The straps and clips are small. When you have wet cold hands it is an extra effort to open it. The clips are small but very tough it requires substantial strength and finesse to operate them. While this system is much more robust durable and versatile then a zipper would be, ( even if by some chance I would break one of the clips I can just tie the straps in the knot and still close the bag, if a zipper breaks you are SOLuck.) It is much less convenient. The way I used it is to place the stuff in the main compartment I don't need all the time and the external easy access pocket would hold all the essentials. Water tools extra jacket bike lock and so on.
If versatility, durability and extra space is you number one concern you should get this back with roll top. If not you should check out door gunner version of this bag. It has essentially similar design but is much smaller and has a zipper lid access. In the last few pictures I filled the bag with 10 1.5 liter (50 fl.oz) liter bottles in extended mode less 3 bottles in the zipped up compressed mode. Door gunner holds max 6 bottles with two bottles in the side pockets. This is to show how much you can fit although this doesn't entail that such use would be comfortable for such size pack. In an outdoors survival bushcraft setting I would choose the Quandry version of this bag. In a mixed city casual outdoor bicycle setting I feel like door gunner is more convenient.
